DWR's Delta Survey of 1978-1980   The "Atwater" Surveys      Back toINDEX

Brian Atwater and crew compaired older surveys of the Delta with their own current survey, to come up with a great series of maps showing where the Delta islands and waterways were in the 1850's, the first official survey for the state, and compared to subsequent official surveys over the years.  Official surveys included elevations, in some instances, which are recorded in the Atwater maps.  It is interesting to note that some of the Delta islands have NOT subsided as the current administration of the state would want viewers to believe.  Natural waterway courses in the North Delta are clearly defined over time; those natural waterways are eliminated in 2012 DWR maps of the state, in come instances.  Please also see the Official Surveys of the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta from 1900 to 1939  which provide large scanned maps in pdf so the viwer can scale up to the details to view maps the atwater study no doubt included.

In any case, here's links to some of the Atwater survey maps that have been scanned.  We can add the rest if requested.
